What Does the Person Experience in the Immediate Transition After Death?
In the immediate transition after death the person remains conscious and reviews the life that has just ended. There is a period of rest and clear seeing in which the events of the life can be understood without the limits of the physical body. The consciousness of the person is not lost or diminished. It continues with full awareness and begins to recognize the larger identity that includes other lives. Many people come to past life regression when they want to understand what a loved one experienced after death, or when they want to reduce their own fear of the transition.
What occurs in the first period after death?
The person experiences a release from physical sensation and a rapid review of the life just completed. Events can be seen from more than one perspective, and the emotional tone of the life becomes clear. There is no sudden disappearance of identity. The person remains himself/herself while the review takes place. Guides or other portions of the larger identity may be present to assist with orientation, yet the review itself belongs to the individual. Clients who recover this period in regression often describe a sense of relief and of finally understanding circumstances that were confusing while the body was still alive.
Does the person lose their sense of self?
No. The sense of self continues. The person knows who it is and can recognize people it has known. The difference is that the physical limits that previously organized experience are no longer present. Memory of the life remains available, and emotional connections remain active. The person can also become aware of other lives they has lived, which expands rather than erases the present identity. The transition is a change in focus, not a loss of the person who has just lived.
How long does the immediate transition last?
The length of the immediate period varies. Some person completes the initial review quickly and move into the broader between-lives state. Others remain longer with the life just ended, studying particular events or remaining near people who are still in physical form. There is no fixed schedule that is imposed. The person stays with the review for as long as the seeing is useful. In regression, clients sometimes recover both the initial release and the subsequent period of clearer understanding.
What can the living know about this period?
The living can know more about this period through regression and through dreams in which contact with the person continues. Many clients recover a direct sense of the loved one’s continued well-being and of the review that took place. The recovery does not require the loved one to communicate in ordinary ways. It requires the living person to allow the information that is already available. Once the immediate transition is seen, the fear that the person was lost or was suffering usually decreases.
How past life regression applies here
In a past life regression session the focus can include the immediate transition of a loved one or the client’s own anticipated transition. Clients often recover the sense of continued identity, the review of the life, and the absence of suffering. The session makes the period visible so that grief can include the knowledge that the person remains conscious and well.
