Why Don’t We Remember Past Lives?
We do not remember past lives because the physical senses are built to perceive experience one moment at a time. All lives exist simultaneously, yet the body and its senses translate that simultaneous reality into a sequence of past, present, and future. The memory is not erased. It is simply outside the narrow focus the senses maintain while we are in a physical body. People often use past life regression when they want to bring portions of that larger memory into awareness. In one-to-one sessions I work with clients who want to understand why ordinary memory stops at birth and how the lives they have lived continue to shape the one they are living now.
Why do the senses block memory of other lives?
The physical senses can register only a small slice of reality at any moment. They organize experience into a line so that one event appears to end before the next begins. Because of this limitation, the self that is focused in the body treats earlier lives as if they were finished and gone. In actuality those lives are still present. The senses simply cannot hold them in the same frame as the current life. The result is that most people feel as though they began at birth. The feeling is produced by the way the senses work, not by an absence of other existences.
Do all our lives exist at the same time?
Yes. Every life a person has lived exists now. The appearance of sequence is created by the physical focus. When the senses are set aside, as they are in regression or in certain dream states, the separation between lives becomes less rigid. A person may then encounter emotions, abilities, or relationships that belong to another life and recognize them as their own. The encounter does not require the other life to be “over.” It requires only that the present focus widen enough for the simultaneous existence to be noticed.
Can the memory return while we are still in a body?
Portions of the memory can return. Regression is one method that allows the present person to step outside the usual sensory focus long enough to register another life. Clients often describe the experience as a sudden knowing rather than as a story they are inventing. Fears that have no origin in the current life, talents that appear without training, or relationships that feel older than the years spent together frequently become understandable once the other life is seen. The memory does not flood in all at once. It arrives in the measure the present self can use.
What changes when we understand why we forget?
When a person sees that the forgetting is produced by the senses and not by a permanent loss, the other lives stop feeling like distant or doubtful events. They become part of the same self that is reading these words. The recognition does not erase the need to live the present life fully. It shows that the present life is one focus among others that continue to exist. Many clients find that certain patterns lose their power to confuse them once they understand that the pattern belongs to a life that is still present, not to a life that has vanished.
How past life regression applies here
In a past life regression session the ordinary sensory focus is set aside so that another life can be met directly. Clients frequently recover the specific reasons a fear, a gift, or a relationship feels larger than the current biography can explain. The session does not attempt to restore every memory. It brings forward the portion that is relevant to the question the client is living now, so the present life can be met with a wider sense of who is living it.
Frequently asked questions
The physical senses organize experience into a sequence. They keep the focus on the present life, so other lives remain outside ordinary memory even though they continue to exist.
No. They exist simultaneously with the life you are living. The sense that they are past is created by the way the body perceives time.
Regression often brings forward emotions, images, and recognitions from another life. The material usually arrives as a direct knowing that explains something in the present rather than as a complete historical record.
The opposite usually occurs. When a pattern is understood as belonging to a life that still exists, the present person is freer to respond to current circumstances instead of reacting to an unexplained residue.
