Do All Our Lives Exist at Once? Simultaneous Time and Parallel Lives
All of our lives exist at once. What we experience as past, present, and future is the way the physical senses organize a reality that is simultaneous. The life you are living now, the lives you call past, and the lives that have not yet appeared in linear time are all present together. Parallel lives are simply other focuses of the same self that are occurring alongside this one. In my book Beyond Past Lives I explore how this simultaneous existence can be worked with directly. Many people come to past life regression when an emotion or a relationship feels larger than the current biography can explain. In one-to-one sessions I work with clients who want to meet the other lives that are occurring now and see how those lives affect the one in which they are focused.
How can lives that seem finished still be present?
The physical senses register experience in sequence, so one life appears to end before another begins. Outside that sensory focus, the lives continue together. A woman who carried a lifelong fear of water recovered, in regression, a simultaneous existence in which she was a sailor who drowned. The fear was not a memory of something over. It was the emotional tone of a life that was still occurring. Once she met that life directly, the fear in her present focus loosened because she was no longer reacting to an event she believed was finished. The sailor’s life did not stop. Her relationship to it changed.
What are parallel lives?
Parallel lives are other versions of the self that are living different circumstances at the same time. They are not alternate fantasies. They are additional focuses through which the larger self explores abilities and relationships. A man who repeatedly chose partners who could not commit discovered a parallel life in which he was the one who left. The pattern in his present life was the continuation of an understanding that had not yet been completed in either focus. When he experienced the parallel life in which he was the one who departed, the compulsion to recreate the same imbalance in his current relationships eased. Both lives remained. The unfinished piece between them had been met.
How does work done in this life reach the others?
Because the lives are simultaneous, an understanding reached in the present focus is available to the whole self. A client who had miscarried several times connected, in regression, with a parallel existence in which she was a child watching her mother lose a pregnancy. The grief and confusion she had absorbed in that life were still active. When those emotions were released in the session, the pressure she had felt around conception in her present life diminished. She did not have to visit every parallel life individually. The completion that occurred where her attention was focused registered across the others.
What changes when simultaneous time is understood?
When a person sees that other lives are not behind them but alongside them, patterns that once felt mysterious become recognizable as ongoing. Blame toward the present self often decreases, because the self is no longer held solely responsible for an issue that is being lived in more than one place. At the same time, the present life gains clarity. It is the focus in which attention can be brought to bear, and attention brought here affects the rest. Clients frequently report that certain fears, attractions, or relational loops lose their automatic power once the simultaneous lives are acknowledged and the relevant understanding is completed.
How past life regression applies here
In a past life regression session the ordinary sequential focus is set aside so that another life occurring now can be met. Clients often recover the specific parallel or simultaneous existence that carries the emotion or pattern they are living, experience the point at which understanding stopped, and complete that understanding in the present. The session does not attempt to map every life. It brings forward the one that is active in the question the client came to resolve, so the present focus can be lived with greater freedom.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The appearance of past and future is created by the physical senses. Outside that focus, the lives are simultaneous.
A parallel life is another focus of the same self that is living different circumstances at the same time. It is not a metaphor. It is an additional existence through which development continues.
Yes. Because the lives are simultaneous, an understanding completed in the present focus is available to the whole self and can alter the way the same issue is lived elsewhere.
The lives we call past are still present. The term “past” describes how they appear to the physical senses, not their actual status.
