Fear Is a Messenger: What Your Fear Is Trying to Tell You

Quick answer: Fear is a messenger from your Higher Self. It shows up when you’re about to move past an old perception of who you are and what’s possible. In the body, fear feels much like excitement, because it carries the same energy. When you listen to the message and keep walking, you find a fuller life waiting on the other side.

Almost every meaningful change I’ve seen in a client’s life began with fear. A new relationship, a new career, a book finally written, a move across the world. Fear seems to arrive right on time, just as something good is about to happen.

I talked about this with Johanna Carroll on her show, Dialogue with Divinity. You can listen to our full interview. Here is how I understand fear, and how you can work with it.

What does it mean that fear is a messenger?

When people tell me they’re afraid, I often say, “Fear is just a messenger.” It carries news from your Higher Self, your inner self, the divine.

The message sounds something like this: you’ve built a limited picture of yourself and of life, and you’re about to step beyond it. On the other side, there’s something joyful and fulfilling. As I put it to Johanna, “this fear that you’re experiencing is not bigger than you.”

So the fear itself is a sign of growth. It tells you that you’re standing at the edge of something new.

Why does everyone’s fear look different?

“We dress it differently.” One person fears failure. Another fears success. Someone else fears being judged, or being alone, or losing control.

Underneath the costume, the core is usually the same. In the interview I described it as “the fear of the unknown, the fear of becoming something else, the fear of shedding the old you and becoming a new you.”

Knowing this helps. You can stop arguing with the details of your fear and recognize the deeper message: change is near.

Why does fear feel like excitement?

Notice what happens in your body before a first date, a big presentation or a long trip. Your heart races. Your stomach flutters. You feel alert and charged.

That’s the same set of sensations you feel when you’re scared. As I explained on the show, “in our body, fear physically feels much the same as excitement.” The energy is identical. What changes is the filter you see it through. Seen through old, negative perceptions, it reads as danger. Seen through a clear filter of possibility, it reads as anticipation.

This gives you a choice. The next time fear rises, try naming it as excitement and see what shifts.

How do you move through fear?

Here’s the approach I share with clients:

  1. Name it. Say, “This is fear, and it’s bringing me a message.”
  2. Ask what it’s pointing to. What new version of you is trying to emerge?
  3. Reframe the sensation. Tell yourself, “My body is getting ready for something exciting.”
  4. Take one step. Make the call, write the first page, send the email. Action turns the message into movement.
  5. Trust the bridge. In my words, “trust that there will be something else on the other side of this bridge that you’re crossing.”

If uncertainty is what scares you most, my article on how to trust the unknown offers more support.

Can a fear come from a past life?

Sometimes. Some fears feel far bigger than anything in your current life can explain. In past life regression, people often find the moment a fear began in another lifetime, and seeing that origin helps them recognize that they’re safe now. Read more about unexplained fears and past lives, and learn what past life regression is.

One story from my interview shows this clearly: a writer who discovered why being seen felt so risky. I share it in Fear of Being Seen.

What’s waiting on the other side of fear?

I described it to Johanna as “that Garden of Eden, that extraordinary experience that will feel so blissful, so joyful, so fulfilling.” For some people it’s a relationship. For others it’s creative work, a calling or simply a lighter way of living.

Fear can also hide inside how we receive love. If you notice that, you might enjoy The Opposite of Love Is Guilt. You’ll find more on the soul’s journey on my past lives page.

Try this today

Write down one thing you’ve been putting off because it scares you. Underneath, write: “This fear is a messenger. It’s telling me that…” and finish the sentence three different ways. Then pick the smallest possible step toward that thing and take it before the end of the day.
